Q. What is your artist name?
A. Onion Peterman is my artist name – there is no specific meaning or story behind it. I just like the sound of it.
Q. Where in Hong Kong did you grow up?
A. There are several places that I grew up in. I have been living in Mong Kok, Kowloon for a long time so that place holds a lot of memories. Most of my education life was in Shatin and Fotan area. After graduation, I decided to rent my current studio space in Fotan where I spend most of my time making art.
Q.What is your art piece inspired by?
A. It is inspired by the everyday street objects you would see in Hong Kong – like fences, construction signs, traffic cones, street bins etc. I personally enjoy drawing the happenings on the street because there is always something going on. The colors and hues are muted and tuned down creating a more dreamy effect. Realistically, the street objects like the traffic cones are bright orange but for this piece, I made it pale pink to create a more dreamy and whimsical effect.
Q. Best part of being an artist?
Being able to do what I am passionate about. Being an artist is pretty much my full time gig – I also teach drawing so everything I do is creative based.
Q. Any favorite local eats?
